Vavcani Carnival 2010
Skopje, January 13 2010 (HIM)
The traditional Vasilika Carnival, dedicated to St. Basil the Great and the banishment of evil will be held in Vevcani on January 12-13. A novelty of this year’s festival edition is the New Year’s bazaar for craftsmen and souvenir producers. The carnival caravan is set to begin January 13 at 14:00 hrs with the three traditional masks.
There are three traditional masks: bridegroom and bride, August the Stupid, and musicians.
Other masks are basically major or minor carnival groups, which, by means of their costumes, gesticulations, and moves usually symbolize and ridicule social events and figures.
The Vevcani Carnival, which claims a 14 century long legacy, is held every year from 13 to 14 January in the southwestern Macedonian village of Vevcani.
Recognized by the Federation of European Carnival Cities (FECC), the carnival attracts thousands of both domestic and international visitors to see the people of Vevcani disguised in elaborate masks expressing humor and sarcasm. Some of the most common costumes include devils, demons and other mythical characters.
