This year is of historic importance for Macedonia as the country expects an invitation for membership in NATO, a date for start of negotiations for membership in the European Union (EU) and start of visa regime alleviation negotiations.
This was stated at Tuesdays meeting in Skopje between the Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and the Government members and ambassadors of the EU member-countries in Skopje and the European Representative Erwan Fouere

Greece vigorously denies the existence of any ethnic minorities on its territory and attempts to suppress any voices that advocate human rights. Simply raising the issue of the Macedonian minority in Greece causes Greek citizens and politicians alike to react in outrage. The majority of Greek society supports its governments non-recognition and discrimination of its large Macedonian minority. Postal Services Law enters in force
Skopje 30 January 2008 (HIM)
The Postal Services Law, which came in force recently, enables other companies to offer postal services, not only Makedonska Posta, which had monopoly position so far, Dnevnik reads.
The new law is expected to offer competition and gradually controlled liberalisation of the postal services market.
So far, exclusivity in this sphere was given to Makedonska Posta, specially for postal deliveries up to 350 gr.

PM Gruevski to present achieved results in EU accession process

- Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski is to present Tuesday results achieved in the process of Macedonias EU accession before ambassadors of Union member-states.
A press conference will be held afterwards, attended by PM Gruevski, Vice Premier for European Affairs Gabriela Konevska-Trajkovska, Head of European Commission Delegation to Macedonia, Erwan Fouere, as well as ambassadors of Slovenia and France to Macedonia, Alan Bergant and Bernard Valero respectively.

DM Elenovski visits Turkey

- Macedonian Defence Ministrys delegation led by Lazar Elenovski will pay a visit to Turkey on Jan. 29-31.
DM Elenovski Wednesday is to meet with Turkish Defence Minister Vecdi Gonul.
Previously he is to visit the Ataturk Mausoleum where he will lay wreath and afterwards will hold talks with the Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Army, Major General Yashar Buyukanit and Chief of Logistics of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Mehmet Erten. more

Symbolic marking of start of Boskoski and Tarculovskis legal defense

The beginning of the legal defense in the trial of Ljube Boskoski and Johan Tarculovski in the Hague Tribunal will be marked symbolically today with an exhibition of their works made in The Hague detention center.
The exhibition, displaying around 40 paintings and ceramic objects produced by Boskoski and Tarculovski, will be opened tonight in the Cultural-Information Center. more

Minimal number of infected with flu this year

A total of 319 persons infected with flu were registered in Macedonia until Sunday, the Republic Healthcare Institution (RHI) reported.

Wind in Debar damaged roofs and trees
Debar 29 January 2008 (HIM)
Storm with strong wind struck Debar and its surroundings on Monday, causing damage to house roofs and rooting out a number of old trees.
As reported by HIM correspondent, most damaged was Inter-Municipality Center for Social Works, whose roof was blown away by the wind, but fortunately, no bypasser was injured.
